Slaughter of Bhaironath and construction of temple by Shridhar
Shridhar, a great devotee of Maa Vaishnavi, lived in Harshali village, 2
kilometers away from the present Katra town. He was sad because of being
childless. On the day of Kanya Pujan, mother sat there along with 9 girls. Even
after all the girls had left, the mother continued to sit there and ordered
Sridhar to invite everyone. Baba Gorakhnath and his disciple Bhaironath were
also present in the invitation.
Mother started serving food to everyone from a special type of vessel. When she
reached Bhaironath, Bhaironath ordered meat and wine to be brought for the
meal. When the mother refused, Bhairo wanted to catch the mother. But mother
took the form of air and started flying towards Trikuta mountain. Mother
entered a cave there and did penance for 9 years.
Hanuman ji protected the mother during this entire period and also fought with
Bhairo. When Hanuman ji started getting tired in the war, then the mother took
the form of Mahakali and separated Bhairo's head from his torso.
Later Mata Rani appeared in Sridhar's dream and blessed him with a child.
Sridhar also set out in search of the mother. On finding the cave, he built a
temple there and started offering prayers.
Incarnation of Adi Shakti and proposal
of marriage to Shri Ram:
The second belief is that due to the loss of religion in the world and the
increase of the forces of unrighteousness, the three forms of Adi Shakti – Maa
Durga, Maa Saraswati and Maa Lakshmi gave birth to a girl child by their
collective penance. This girl came to the house of Pandit Ratnakar in Rameshwar
in the form of a daughter.
Childless for many years, Ratnakar named his daughter Trikuta. But due to being
a part of Lord Vishnu, it became famous by the name Vaishnavi. When Trikuta
came to know that Lord Vishnu has also incarnated in the form of Rama, then she
began to do severe penance considering Lord Rama as her husband.
When Shri Ram reached Rameshwar after killing Ravana, he saw a meditating girl
on the shore. When the girl asked Lord Rama to accept her as his wife, Rama
replied, "I have married Sita in this birth and have taken the vow of a
wife." Now I will take birth as Kali in Kaliyuga and marry you. Till that
time you go to the Trikuta mountain of the Himalayas and do penance and remove
the sufferings of the devotees.
She had also received the blessing of Shri Ram, who promised that she would
live forever and serve the world as Trikuta.
